@ communication in an medieval setting:Make the setting the Court of a King, Emperor or Pope and the Player-Groups are Knightly Orders, Noble Families etc lobbying for influence and doing other sneaky stuff problem solved^^ e.g. In Legend of the Five Rings there are Winter Courts: In winter noone can fight a war, since the passes are all snowbound. So at the end of autumn the diplomats of the 9 big Clans (plus a few of the small ones) meet in the big castles to pass time till the spring comes = discuss poltics, forge alliances and plan wars etc. ... and of course many noble families lobby in the year before, that the next Winter Court in their castle will host the Empress

Seasonal turns, I like the idea! Very medieval flair, and realistic to boot. If we go with fantasy / historical, we'll definitely have to take that into consideration! re: "make the setting a Court" that would be a most simple solution, indeed. Unfortunately, it is not suitable to some of the settings that have yet been suggested. (At least two of them require player factions to be physically distributed across a rather large Empire or other Realm ) But for those where it could work, perhaps it is indeed advisable to go with the easiest possible approach... Thanks for the input, Darth!
